After the success of Godzilla Minus One, a monster movie that grossed over $113 million worldwide, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. Until now, news about the project has been scarce, but now the plot of the sequel has been leaked online, hinting at a “monstrous” return.
For the moment, the only confirmations we have about the sequel concern the title, Godzilla Minus Zero, and the return of director Takashi Yamazaki, as well as the special effects team, which won an Oscar for the 2024 original. Here’s what the new previews released by SFFGazette.com reveal.
Leaked plot details
After the devastating consequences of Godzilla’s first assault in Godzilla Minus One, Kōichi Shikishima (Ryūnosuke Kamiki) is determined to lead a peaceful existence, rebuilding his family with Noriko (Minami Hamabe) and young Akiko (Sae Nagatani), moving away from the nightmares of war and monsters.
His tranquility is interrupted by the return of Godzilla, completely regenerated, bigger and fiercer than ever, while an ancient force begins to awaken beneath Aokigahara, near Mount Fuji, endangering the fragile nation and forcing Kōichi to reconsider his promise.
As the stakes are higher than ever, Kōichi reluctantly returns to battle, joining his old comrades and the forces of the US-Japan alliance to face the two kaiju and protect those he loves, especially as Noriko’s connection to Godzilla grows stronger, pulling her dangerously closer to the monster’s fury.
What awaits us in the sequel?
To get a better idea of the situation, you can refer to our review of Godzilla Minus One. According to the leaked plot, the sequel will bring back the characters from the first film and also hints at an alliance between Japanese and American soldiers to fight not one but two kaiju.
The presence of American characters could foreshadow an economic effort by Toho to hire some Hollywood stars, attracting the attention of the international audience that already rewarded the first film.
As for the second Kaiju, the prevailing theory at the moment is that we will see a new version of Mothra, but it is also possible that a new creature similar to Titan X from the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will arrive.
Godzilla Minus Zero will hit theaters in November 2026.
