The fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer is undoubtedly the darkest of the Netflix series. Picking up directly from the sensational cliffhanger of the third season, the new episodes see Mickey Haller end up behind bars, accused of the murder of his former client Sam Scales. But how does this new, absurd case end?
While Mickey struggles to prove his innocence, his team desperately tries to keep the law firm afloat and figure out who framed him. To make matters even more difficult, there are dramatic events such as the sudden death of his mentor Legal Siegel and family problems, with his daughter Hayley being bullied at school. On the legal front, Mickey faces the formidable prosecutor Dana “Death Row Dana” Berg, who is convinced of his guilt.
As the episodes unfold, an intricate plot emerges involving million-dollar scams, the Armenian mafia, and a secret federal investigation. The truth about Sam’s murder is more complex than expected: the man worked as an informant for the FBI, but he was killed by Alex Gazarian, his business partner, after discovering that Sam was stealing from him. The body is hidden in Mickey’s car, partly out of personal revenge linked to events from previous seasons.
The turning point in the finale comes when Mickey and his team realize that the FBI has every interest in preventing Alex Gazarian’s partner, Jeanine Ferrigno, from testifying. If Jeanine speaks in court, she risks blowing up a much larger federal investigation into biofuel fraud involving Sam, Alex, and several companies under investigation.
Exploiting this weakness, the defense devises a precise strategy: to make the FBI believe that Jeanine is ready to testify publicly, revealing compromising details about the undercover operation. At that point, federal agents intervene directly in court and ask the judge to block her testimony, declaring that she is a protected witness in an active investigation.
In exchange for his silence, the FBI agrees to drop all charges against Mickey, implicitly acknowledging that he is not involved in the murder of Sam Scales. However, Mickey is not satisfied with simply being released: he demands very specific conditions. The first is an official public declaration of his complete innocence, made by prosecutor Dana Berg, the same person who for months has portrayed him as a murderer in the public eye. For Mickey, it is essential to restore his reputation, not just win the trial; his second demand concerns the opening of an internal investigation against Agent Roy Collins, the police officer who arrested him and framed him by placing the body in the trunk of his car.
The ending, as usual, leaves us breathless with a twist: Mickey escapes an assassination attempt thanks to a mysterious woman who, after saving his life, introduces herself as… his sister! The season ends thus, paving the way for a fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, already confirmed, which promises new secrets and twists.
